Reciprocation: How to use your training environment to your performative advantage - Bill Porter

In order to progress in training, there are many variables an athlete and a coach must consider. The big rocks for training progression include following an intelligent program, having the support of a coach, looking after our physical and mental wellbeing and above all, having consistency and continuity with our training. A factor that can sometimes be overlooked in potentiating our highest level of performance is our training environment.

Reciprocation refers to the act of responding to someone else’s actions or feelings with a similar response. Research shows that the overarching success of humans as a species can be deduced down to almost a singular factor – co-operation or co-dependence. In the gym, we can actively use reciprocation to augment culture and in turn get the most out of our training.

What does this look like in practice?

  • Putting energy into the training environment // taking energy out of the training environment

  • Supporting other people in a group environment // receiving support from your peers

  • Your training group is consistent with their training // you are more likely to be consistent with your training

  • Putting effort into communicating with your coach // your coach having accurate information to make informed decision on your training

  • Demonstrating hard work and commitment // inspiring others to do the same

  • Navigating challenges such as injury or time constraints // helping others in a similar situation

  • Supporting your teammates mentally // fostering a better relationship affording you support when you need it

Theres no way around the fact that training is hard, however, within the hard work is where you will find the true value in training. The more time and effort you put into people and place, the more influence you have in shaping that culture, and consequently the more support you will take out.
